Hanging
The suspension of a person by a noose or ligature around the neck. Hanging has been a common method of capital punishment and was the official execution method in numerous places in the Elizabethan era. There were two methods of performing a judicial hanging at the time: suspension hanging and the short drop.
Suspension - Suspension causes death by using the weight of the body to tighten around the trachea and neck structure with the noose. The victim slowly dies of strangulation, which takes between ten and twenty minutes.
Short drop - performed by placing the victim on the back of a cart, horse, or other vehicle, with the noose around the neck. The object would move away leaving the person dangling from the rope. The victim would die of strangulation. Sometimes a stool would be used and kicked away by the executioner.
